Many citizens from India are choosing to immigrate to Canada. Whether it is to live, work or study, Canada is a gold mine of opportunities. We’ll break down the top reasons why, and how to move to Canada from India with the Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs.

Why Citizens of India Are Choosing Canada

Job Opportunities

India is the second most populated country in the world, after China. This massive population means intense competition for employment opportunities. Canada is on the other end of this spectrum, being the second-largest country in the world, they have a sparse population and actually do not have enough workers to supply their workforce. This is one of the biggest factors prompting citizens of India to immigrate to Canada. For people from India, a gap exists to find suitable employment, which could sometimes prove rather difficult in their densely populated home country. To add to this, Canada boasts an attractive minimum wage of around 11 dollars per hour, depending on the province in which you work. This is a massive difference in comparison to the minimum wage in India, which is less than 50 cents an hour!

Free Healthcare and Education

For parents, Canada is an attractive country to immigrate to with their children. With subsidized healthcare until the age of 25, including over the counter and prescription medication, this adds to the peace of mind parents look for when moving anywhere with their children. In addition to free healthcare, the Canadian government also covers the cost of children's education all the way through to secondary school. In addition, Canada is home to some of the world's top-tier universities, with students coming from all across the globe to further their education at Canadian tertiary institutions.

Canada Is Accommodating to Immigrants

Immigrants make up a large percentage of the Canadian population, in main cities such as Toronto, up to 40% of the population. This means that Canada has fostered an environment that welcomes immigrants with open arms, and allows all cultures to live in harmony. Many immigrants have a difficult time moving to another country, where they might not be accepted and will even face discrimination. The environment in Canada makes it easier to adapt to your new country, making it a popular choice among Indian people.

How to Apply to Move to Canada From India

Express Entry Program

The Express Entry Program was established to address the shortage of skilled workers in Canada. Through this program, eligible candidates can obtain a permanent residence visa in as little as 6 months! The eligibility criteria that generally apply to all prospective candidates include but are not limited to age, level of education, occupation, work experience in the designated profession, language proficiency in either English or French, as well as how likely you are to adapt to life in Canada following immigration. It's important to note that the eligibility criteria are always changing, and you may be subject to additional criteria depending on your individual application and situation. How well you fare in these categories is put into a rating system called the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) which gives you a CRS score. Candidates with the highest CRS scores in the Express Entry pool of candidates will receive an Invitation to Apply in the next Express Entry draw. After receiving an ITA, candidates have 60 days to apply for permanent residence.

Provincial Nominee Program

The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) was established to grant each province in Canada control over their individual immigration needs. For instance, if the province of Manitoba has a shortage of accountants, they can hand-pick eligible candidates from the Express Entry pool who meet this need. Prospective candidates can also apply directly to the province by submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI). The immigration official will respond to the EOI’s of favourable candidates with an invitation to apply for permanent residence. If you want to move to a specific province of Canada from India and you meet the requirements for one of their Provincial Nominee Programs, this could be the perfect opportunity for you!
