Famous Sights
Nunavut has plenty of national parks to explore, namely Auyuittuq, Quttinirpaaq, Sirmilik, Katannilik and Ukkusiksalik National Park. Auyuittuq National Park is the most accessible of the three and is known for its glaciers, cliffs and valleys. For the experienced extremist, Mt Thor is the world’s highest sheer cliff. Quttinirpaaq offers magnificent mountains and wilderness, which are home to a number of indigenous species, such as the muskox, wolverine and Peary caribou. Be sure not to miss multi-day treks up Mt Barbeau or along Lake Hazen Basin in 24 hour daylight! Bylot Island in Sirmilik National Park, is a glacier bird sanctuary where you can spot an array of marine life such as seals, whales and walruses. Katannilik Territorial Park has two amazing features to discover: Soper river and Itijjagiaq Trail. One of the best places to observe polar bears in their natural habitat has to be Ukkusiksalik National Park. Its highlights include barren tundra, a multitude of lakes as well as a magnificent reversing waterfall.
Iqaluit is a dusty town that is surprisingly cosmopolitan with plenty of accommodation and restaurants to sample local delicacies, as well as a spectacular wilderness to uncover. Cape Dorset is home to world-renowned artists creating remarkable Arctic carvings and prints. Resolute is a tiny community on Cornwallis Island perfect for the recluse looking for a quiet getaway on the unbeaten path.
