Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island (PEI) is one of the country’s three Maritime Provinces and oldest settlements still reflecting Canada’s heritage. It is located in the Atlantic ocean and consists of the main island surrounded by various smaller islands. PEI is not the smallest province but has the smallest population in Canada. It is renowned for its sienna-coloured shores, verdant pastures and cascading hills. Visitors can explore the province by car or bike and enjoy the warm and inviting nature of these charming seaside villages and farmlands. It is perfect for those who enjoy a slower pace and small-town living.
Famous Sights
Basin Head Provincial Park is home to the famed Singing Sands Beach aptly named after the whistling sound that it produces as visitors walk across the sand. Prince Edward Island National Park is a magnificent expanse of wetlands and forests with diverse species of flora and fauna. Be sure to stop by the historic Point Prim Lighthouse as well as the Green Gables Heritage Place, home to the famed author of Anne of Green Gables.
Charlottetown is Prince Edward Island’s biggest city with a perfect blend of a metropolitan and small-town atmosphere. It is home to the national landmark, Confederation Centre, which houses a number of historical exhibits as well as brutalist architecture. The Confederation Trail, once an active railway, is a great way to explore the island by bike, foot or snowmobile in winter, and take in the breathtaking seascapes and undulating hills. PEI Distillery offers a variety of artisanal spirits, most notably, it’s award-winning vodka. Foodies can enjoy farm- and ocean-to-table culinary delights on every shore.
