How to Immigrate to Canada?

There are many options when immigrating to Canada. Some of which are the Express Entry, the Provincial Nominee Program or studying in Canada to qualify for a Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP).

Express Entry

Express Entry is an online system that selects candidates for permanent residence in Canada, through three federal economic programs known as the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

Federal Skilled Worker Program is a program for foreigners who can contribute to Canada’s economy with their work experience, set of skills or qualifications.

  • Skilled work experience - have a minimum of one year (part-time or full-time) experience in a NOC skill type (A, 0 or B).
  • Language ability - get a minimum score of a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 in all four abilities for English and French.
  • Education - have at least a certificate from a secondary institution (high school).

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

The Federal Skilled Trades Program allows foreigners with work experience in eligible trade occupations to immigrate to Canada.

  • Meet the required language levels for each language ability.
  • Have at least two years of full-time work experience or equivalent part-time work.
  • Meet job requirements for skilled trade set out in the NOC
  • Have a valid job offer for a period of at least one year or a certificate of qualification in the specific skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial or federal authority.

Canada Experience Class (CEC)

The Canada Experience Class (CEC) is a program to help foreigners who are seeking permanent residency in Canada and who have gained Canadian work experience through a temporary work permit.

  • Meet the required language levels for each language ability;
  • Have at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada (full-time or part-time equivalent to one year), in the last three years.;

The Provincial Nominee Program is an agreement between the government and local provinces. Provinces can nominate immigrants who want to live and work in that particular province.

Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

Post-Graduate Work Permit is for foreign students who have completed their studies and wish to stay and work in Canada. The PGWP allows them to work anywhere in Canada.

Depending on the length of the study program, the permit can be valid for a period of eight months to three years. In that time students will gain Canadian work experience which can open the door to getting permanent residency in Canada.
