Wondering what it will be like to live in Canada in 2021? With 2020 behind us, it’s not a surprising question to ask. Many people are left wondering how the effects of COVID-19 will translate into the new year. The good news is that things are slowly but surely getting back to normal. Some people suggest a ‘new normal’ with altered consumer habits and an increase in remote work opportunities across the country.   In this blog, we look at 6 things that will change and some things that will remain the same in Canada in 2021.

1. Covid-19 Recovery

Is the end to the pandemic in sight? Canada was one of the first countries to begin COVID-19 vaccinations in December 2020, and Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau believes that the majority of Canadians will be vaccinated by the end of 2021. Canada’s free universal healthcare system proved its efficiency during the pandemic with free testing and treatments for all citizens and permanent residents. Canada’s economy is also on a fast road to recovery with unemployment rates down from 13.7% in May 2020 to 8.5% in December 2020!  Canada’s immigration minister, Marco Mendicino, announced Canada’s immigration level plans for the next three years. Canada aims to welcome over 1.2 million newcomers by 2023 through various immigration classes as part of a COVID-19 economic recovery strategy.  Can you immigrate and live in Canada in 2021? Find out with our in-depth eligibility assessment.

2. It’s Still Cold

Canada is one of the top 5 coldest countries to live in. With its sub-arctic regions, temperatures can drop to as low as minus 39 degrees. The Canadian winter lasts from mid-December to mid-March. But winter in Canada is anything but gloomy. With its spectacular snowfall, you can enjoy many exciting winter activities such as skiing on world-famous slopes, ice-skating on frozen lakes, and exploring winter markets and festivals where kids can make ice candies, and you can indulge in Canadian food favorites and warm drinks. Canada is a large country which means that temperature and climate vary from province to province. Take a look at the graph below to discover the warmest and coldest regions in Canada.

3. A Possible Election Year

If you live in Canada in 2021 then you may be able to participate in a Federal election but that’s only if you have obtained citizenship. Nothing has been validated yet but there has been some speculation about a possible 2021 election.  "We might have an election," the Prime Minister said about the potential for a vote in 2021. He further added that it is up to the opposition in a minority parliament. The two dominant political parties in Canada have historically been the Liberal Party of Canada and the current Conservative Party of Canada.

4. Simply the Best

Even during a pandemic that took the world by surprise and had governments scrambling for ways to stop the spread, Canada still managed to walk away with the second prize. According to the 2020 Best Countries report by US News and World Report, Canada has been ranked as the second-best country globally, climbing a spot since 2019. The report focuses on the global perceptions of 73 nations. Canada is seen as the world's most transparent country with a high quality of life.

So, what will it be like to live in the second-best country in the world? If you settle in one of the cosmopolitan cities in Canada such as Toronto and Vancouver you will be a road trip away from some of the best views of Canada’s spectacular nature and national parks. Talk about having the best of both lives. You and your family will also get access to free, high-quality universal healthcare and education that are publicly funded. Canada is a safe and secure country with a low crime rate and a clean environment. In fact, we have some of the cleanest air in the world! You will become a hockey fan and learn new skills, such as walking in 2-inch deep snow and dodging polar bears by hiding in strangers' cars.  Not to mention, the friendliness of Canadians is undeniable, eh?

5. Diverse and Welcoming

Canada adopted a national policy of multiculturalism, which celebrates the country’s diversity. The population is made up of people who hail from different places such as India, Australia, Uganda, the UK, China, and many more. You can naturally expect to find delicious ethnic cuisines in every city and religious holidays such as Ramadan, Easter, and Diwali are celebrated across the country. Canada celebrates Multiculturalism Day on the 27 of June. The day is intended to encourage individuals to reflect on our shared commitment to democracy, equality, and mutual respect.

6. Cost of Living in Canada in 2021

A Canadian family of four can expect to spend almost $700 more on food this year, according to a collaborative report released by four Canadian universities. Meat, baked goods, and vegetables will likely see the greatest increases. The increase in food prices reflects pandemic-related challenges to low oil prices. On a more positive spectrum, Fitch Ratings expects Canadian home prices to decline by up to five percent in 2021 due to the slightly higher unemployment rate and affordability issues.
