Once you have decided which job you are interested in doing, the next step to being able to work in Canada is to apply for a Canada work permit. There are various work permit programs you can apply through. To increase your chances of success, it is important to choose the program that is best for you.

Let’s take a look at the different Canada work permit programs:

There are two main types of work permits in Canada, namely the open work permit and the employer-specific work permit. Here’s the difference between the two:

The Open Work Permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada. Work permit programs such as the International Experience Canada (working holiday visa) and the International Mobility programs operate under the Open Work Permit.

The Employer-Specific Work Permit includes the name of your employer in Canada and you are only able to work for that employer. Various streams are processed under this work permit, depending on your job offer.

We’ve outlined two Canadian work permit programs that will allow you to work in various occupations including the in demand jobs mentioned above. The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) and the Federal Skilled Trades Program(FSTP) will also allow you to gain permanent residency in Canada if your application is successful.

What is the Federal Skilled Worker Program?

The Federal Skilled Worker Program is part of the popular Express Entry system which fast-tracks visa applications with a processing time of as little as six months.

The FSWP is made for people who have either qualifications, skills, or work experience that can contribute to the Canadian economy.

Requirements to apply through the FSWP include:

  • Demonstrate that you meet the minimum visa requirements
  • Have work experience in a managerial, professional or trade/technical occupation
  • Meet the pass mark on a points-based assessment

If your application is successful, this will allow you to obtain permanent residency in Canada.

What is the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)?

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is also managed by the Express Entry system which allows for the same fast-tracked application process. The FSTP is geared towards trade workers with work experience in eligible trade occupations and allows successful applicants to immigrate to Canada.

Requirements to qualify for the FSTP include:

  • 2 years semi-skilled work experience
  • 1 year valid job offer in Canada
  • Language ability in English or French (CLB4)
