Latest Express Entry Draw Issues 3,600 ITAs for Permanent Residence

The largest Express Entry draw of 2019 has just been held, issuing a staggering 3,600 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for Canadian permanent residence to successful candidates. This massive draw accounts for the greater immigration target of 2019, which is set to break the records of 2018. The same draw also saw the minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score continue to drop for the 3rd consecutive draw to a low of 460.

How Express Entry Works

 

The Express Entry system was created in 2015 to assist Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) process visa applications faster. It was made to address the increasing need for foreign skilled workers in Canada due to a rapidly ageing population and low population growth. Express Entry has proven to be a successful initiative to reduce the application processing time to as little as six months.

If you would like to have your application processed through this system you will first have to meet the requirements for one of the Federal economic immigration programs, namely the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Skilled Trades Program and Canadian Experience Class. Following this step, you will have to create a separate online Express Entry profile that measures your core human capital (age, work experience, language ability, educational background etc.) according to the CRS. Your profile will be assigned a score out of a possible 1,200 and thereafter it will be entered into a pool of candidates from which the IRCC holds regular draws, issuing ITAs to the highest-ranking individuals.

Once you have received an ITA, you will be given 6 months to complete your application for permanent residence. If you did not receive an ITA, your profile will remain in the pool of candidates where it will be considered for draws until it expires after one year.

Unlike other immigration systems that can be seen as so-called “lottery systems”, Canada uses a merit-based immigration system. This means that candidates are able to immigrate to Canada based on their skills, not their luck. In other words, you need to make sure your CRS score is as high as possible so that you can secure your very own ITA for Canadian permanent residence. Who Gets Issued ITAs?

 

To answer this question we’ll take a closer look at the latest Express Entry draw. The July 10 draw issued 3,600 ITAs and used a minimum score of 460 as the cut-off point. The tie-break rule was also enforced with the timestamp being, June 11, 2019, at 12:27:18 UTC. This means that all candidates in the Express Entry pool with scores higher than 460 and those with scores equal to 460, who completed their profiles before the aforementioned time and date, were issued ITAs for Canadian permanent residence.

Below are some hypothetical examples of the kind of profiles that qualified for an ITA in the latest draw.

Mohammed is a 29-year-old software engineer with six years of work experience. Both Mohammed and his wife Fatima are proficient English language speakers and neither of them has ever been in Canada. As the secondary applicant, Fatima also scores CRS points because she has a bachelor's degree, an additional tertiary certificate and four years of work experience as an elementary school teacher. Thanks to all these factors, their combined CRS score amounts to 460.

Sarah is a 35-year-old master’s graduate with five years of work experience as a dentist. She scored an eight in every category when she took the IELTS exam. Thanks to this high IELTS score, her work experience and qualifications, Sarah earned 462 points on the CRS.

The Future of Express Entry in 2019

 

Canada is set on its goal of welcoming 1,3 million immigrants into the country by 2021. To meet this target, the country will have to continue holding regular and larger Express Entry draws, which means this year could very well be the easiest year to immigrate Canada.
