Now more than ever, scam artists are trying to take advantage of unsuspecting Canadian visa applicants. Whether it’s fake job offers, fake or copycat websites, social media, email, Whatsapp or telephone scams, it's important to know what to look out for and be able to determine if the Canadian immigration and visa agency is indeed a scam or real. One of the tactics that these scam artists are using to trick people is to pretend to have a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant or RCIC on board. But this is not always the case. Let's take a closer look at ways that you can tell if your immigration agent is fake or real. Any reputable immigration agency is required by the Canadian government to have an accredited immigration consultant or immigration lawyer to be able to provide paid visa and immigration services. These consultants are known as Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCICs) and can only be authorized to assist their clients by The Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC). RCICs must be registered and in good standing with the ICCRC in order to conduct immigration and visa services.

David Allon, is one of our expert immigration consultants and is a highly qualified and accredited RCIC (Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant. With numerous qualifications, including a Master’s Degree in Public Administration (MPA), a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Government, and a Diploma in European Studies, as well as years of experience under his belt, he has assisted thousands of visa applicants in making their Canadian dream a reality. With that in mind, let's delve a little deeper into what to look for in a legitimate immigration consultant to tell if they are fake or real.

1. Are They Qualified?

RCICs are required to complete an Accredited Immigration Practitioner Program (IPPs) at one of the following ICCRC approved institutions:
  • Academy of Learning Career College
  • Anderson College of Health, Business and Technology;
  • Ashton College;
  • Bow Valley College;
  • CDI College;
  • CSIC e-Academy;
  • Herzig College;
  • LaSalle College;
  • University of British Columbia.
This is mandatory in order to become a member of the ICCRC and receive an official registration number. To find out if your immigration consultant is real or fake, simply visit the ICCRC website where you can either enter their registration number or name into the public register or access a full list of RCICs that are both registered and in good standing with the ICCRC. If you click on the “contact” link you will be able to locate where they are based and what company they are associated with. As you can see in the images below, David Allon is a fully accredited RCIC based in Vancouver, British Columbia and is registered with Multi Dimension Consulting (MDC). If you happen to come across any other immigration agency claiming to work with David Allon, you may be dealing with a fraud.

2. Do They Speak a Second Language?

RCICs are required to have an ICCRC approved language test in either English, French or both at an exceptionally high level. Immigration consultants speak to clients from all parts of the world and although it is not mandatory to speak more than one language, it certainly is an asset. As a Canadian, David Allon is fluent in both English and French. If your immigration consultant does not speak either English or French and you are paying for their immigration services, you are most definitely consulting with someone who is not accredited by the ICCRC and therefore may be dealing with a fraud.

3. Are they Recommended?

If you are unsure about whether or not you can trust your immigration consultant or immigration agency it’s always good to check to see if there are any online reviews. Although it is always great to speak to others who have used the agency’s services, it's important to remember that people will always be more likely to give a bad review than they would a good one. It's simply human nature. In the same way, an immigration agency will always provide positive reviews rather than negative ones. And that's why we decided to look to the professionals. According to Canadian Visa Review, MDC is one of their top 10 ranked immigration agencies and is rated 6th worldwide amongst other immigration agencies.
