5 Tips to Create the Best Express Entry Profile

1. Assess Your Eligibility

The initial eligibility assessment is an extremely important step in your Canadian immigration process through Express Entry that is often overlooked. The eligibility assessment gives you an accurate and detailed account of your chances to immigrate to Canada. This gives you more time to analyze the various factors impacting your Comprehensive Ranking System score (CRS) and to take the necessary steps to improve your score. 2. Apply Early to Improve Your CRS Score

Is Canadian immigration something you’ve been considering for a while now, but you have not taken the first step to start the process yet? Understandably, immigration is a big life decision. But the longer you wait, the harder it becomes to move to Canada.  Why? The CRS grants the highest score, 110 points (100 if applying for Express Entry with an accompanying spouse) if your age is between 20 and 29 years. After you turn 30, the number of points you can receive for Human Capital Ranking drops off quite significantly.  While you may also be delaying submitting a profile to gain more work experience or qualification, you might have an age penalty. Remember, your Express Entry profile is valid for one year, but there’s nothing stopping you from submitting again if it expires before you receive an ITA.

3. Boost Your Language Proficiency

Language proficiency is not only one of the most important parts of your Express Entry profile, but it can also increase your chances of securing a job in Canada as an international employee. Before you submit an Express Entry profile or apply for a job, you must take an IELTS (English) or TEF (French) language test. Your results will determine your initial eligibility. But, it’s important to note that meeting the minimum eligibility requirement may actually not be enough to have a competitive profile. A good score can really set your profile apart from the rest and it’s much easier than improving your educational requirements.  The test measures your proficiency in English under the following four categories: speaking, listening, reading and writing. 4. Get an Education Credentials Assessment (ECA)

You can earn up to 150 CRS points depending on your level of education. However, your level of education won’t matter if you don’t have an ECA to prove it. An ECA basically evaluates how your degree compares to the one you would earn in Canada. For this reason, you will earn points for the Canadian equivalent of your degree.  While most candidates only need to have their highest earned degree assessed, it may be a good idea to get all of your post-secondary credentials assessed to make sure you’re claiming as many CRS points as possible. 

5. Foreign Work Experience is an Immigration Kickstarter

The CRS uses the National Occupation Classification (NOC) framework to assign points for work experience. The NOC framework consists of a skill level and four-digit code for every occupation in the labor market. Identifying your NOC code before creating your Express Entry profile is extremely important for a variety of reasons, one being that you may be eligible to apply for a Provincial Nominee if your occupation is in-demand in a specific Canadian province. A Provincial Nominee grants you more CRS points! For Express Entry, only work experience classified as Skill Type 0, Level A, or Level B is considered eligible as foreign work experience.
