PARENT AND GRANDPARENT VISA

Canada encourages extended families to stay together when immigrating to Canada under the Family Visa category. The Parent and Grandparent Visa enables Canadian citizens and permanent residents who are living in Canada to apply for sponsorship of their parents and grandparents. Applicants are required to provide proof of their relationship with their children and grandchildren. The sponsor must also be willing to live in Canada with the applicants and must demonstrate their capabilities to support them financially without the access to public funds.

Basic requirements

  • Applicants must have children or grandchildren who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents living in Canada.
  • The sponsor must provide proof of adequate funds
  • The sponsor must be 18 years or older
  • The sponsor must also sign an agreement to provide all the applicants basic needs for the duration of twenty years from the date of the applicant’s arrival in Canada
  • All applicants are required to go through health and character checks

Parent and grandparent visa benefits

Parents or grandparents who have been granted permanent resident status under the Family Class Visa will have the right to live, work and study in Canada for an indefinite period of time. Permanent residents will have access to Canada’s government-funded health care system, education, language training program and assistance in finding employment. In addition to that, the permanent residents will be eligible for Canada Pension Plan Benefits, Old Age Security, and Guaranteed Old Age Income Supplement benefits.
