A Visitor or Tourist Visa means someone who is lawfully in Canada or seeks to come to Canada for a temporary reason such as work, study, or tourist who is not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
All visitors, unless exempted, must apply for and attain a Visitor’s Visa before entering Canada. Since March 2016 all foreign nationals traveling to Canada by air from visa exempt countries are required to possess an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before entering the country.
Foreign nationals are required to submit an application for a visitors visa to the responsible Canadian visa office in the country or region. Once the Visitor’s Visa has been issued the successful applicant may land in Canada, where at the port of entry, the immigration officer will question the individual to ensure admissibility.
A Visitor Visa may be for single entry or multiple entries. A single entry visa is valid for 6 months, can only be used once, meaning once you leave Canada you will need to apply for a new visa to re-enter the country and can be issued 6 months before the expected date of travel. Multiple entry visas have a maximum validity period of 10 years or one month prior to the expiry of the individual’s passport/ re-entry visa whichever comes first.
