The Investor Visa, otherwise known as the Immigrant Investor Visa, was created to receive applications from international investors who possess the necessary skills, experience and abilities to make a valuable contribution to the Canadian economy and society in general.

The Canadian government uses the Immigrant Investor program to facilitate and attract qualified business people who will be able to make a significant contribution to the growth of the country’s economy by investing significantly in the economy. Investors who meet all of the requirements of this immigration program, with their immediate family members, may be granted their Canadian Permanent Resident Visas.

Basic requirements

All potential immigrant investors must meet the following requirements:

  • The investor must not have the intention of living in Quebec (Quebec has its own unique business visa programs).
  • The investor must adequately demonstrate that he/she has the necessary business experience, and this can be done by providing adequate proof that they owned and managed a respectable business venture with at least 5 employees.
  • The investor is required to have a minimum net worth of at least CAN $1.6 million, which was legally obtained.
  • The investor is also required to make a CAD $800,000 investment to the government of Canada, which will be returned at the end of five years without interest.
  • The investor and any of their family members are not found to be inadmissible on grounds such as health or security.

The CAD $800,000 investment made by the investor to the Canadian government will be used to create jobs and help grow the Canadian economy. The investment will be managed and accounted for by the Citizenship and Immigration Canada, and the applicants will be expected to make their investment within 30 days of being approved for immigration.
